Guest Editors' Introduction-Mobile Computing: When Mobility Meets Computation
نویسندگان
چکیده
—————————— ✦ —————————— One of the most challenging and interesting recent trends in the computer and telecommunications industries is the integration of mobile communications and computing. The resulting distributed network, referred to as a mobile computing system, is in more that one way fundamentally different from conventional wired computer networks. Wireless connectivity enhances the functionality of computing equipment by freeing communication from the location constraints of the wireline infrastructure. By changing this basic characteristic, mobile computing systems operate on a set of assumptions made by traditional computing systems, requiring researchers and users to redefine their model of networked computing. The successful use of mobile computing faces several challenges, among them:

Guest Editors' Introduction: Energy Harvesting and Conservation
P ervasive computing aims to integrate computation into our daily work practice to enhance our activities without being noticed. In other words, computing becomes truly invisible. Yet at the heart of every pervasive computing system are electronic components that consume energy. Managing the energy needs of mobile systems, or systems for which reliable power isn’t guaranteed, can be a significa...
متن کاملMobile Agents - The Right Vehicle for Distributed Sequential Computing
Distributed sequential computing (DSC) is computing with distributed data using a single locus of computation. In this paper we argue that computation mobility—the ability for the locus of computation to migrate across distributed memories and continue the computation as it meets the required data—facilitated by mobile agents with strong mobility is essential for scalable distributed sequential...
متن کاملGuest Editors' Introduction: The Smart Phone--A First Platform for Pervasive Computing
O ne way in which the vision of ubiquitous computing has become a reality is in the ubiquity of mobile phones. Over a billion mobile phones exist today, a third of which are in China. In many Asian countries, more mobile phones are used than domestic landlines; in Singapore, mobile phones outnumber citizens.1 Mobile phones are thus a nearconstant companion of a significant percentage of the wor...
